If the State and plumbing industry get their way a sump pump installation can only be done by a licensed plumber. This is amazing since most plumbers put in a five gallon bucket and leave it open to vent radon, ground humidity right up into the basement. There is a group of waterproofing contractors who have hired lawyers to defend the rights of waterproofing, radon and foundation repair companies so that they can continue to install sump pumps and drainage systems without having to hire a…Continue

Competitor or Colleague?

It amazes me after 31 years in the basement waterproofing business how our industry is very different from other industries. Through my years of helping people solve their wet basement problems there has been only one place where a individual could share and learn from other waterproofing contractors. I am proud to say that since its inception in 1981 the NAWC (National Association of Waterproofing Contractors) has been a place where people could start talking to one another. The same proved…Continue

crawlspace smell

Would like to know if any one has a solution to control a crawl space damp smell coming up through the floor registers installed for the humidex system. I have recently had my crawl space sealed up with a complete drylock system and had a humidex machine installed. It works great and i can already smell the difference in my home, however when the machine cuts off, the damp smell rises through the floor registers that were cut to provide a flow of air from inside the house to the crawl space.…Continue

Combustion Air for Gas Furnace in Sealed Crawl Space. I'm aware of the Tjernlund In Forcer Crawl Space Fan. Can a sealed combustion closet be built for a horizontal furnace in a sealed crawl space, with one or two ducts running through one of the old crawl space vent holes? In this particular crawl space I'm considering, it seems the outside combustion air intake would slope down to the "combustion "closet" and terminate within the top 12" of the enclosure and the clearances could be around 1' above and more around, with a weather sealed access door as well. I guess the in forcer would be easier for $300, but is a horizontal combustion closet possible/legal? I'm bound by North Carolina residential code which references the international fuel gas code, but have seen more info from and about the NFPA national fuel code, not sure what differences might be. Thanks!
